The Clover Point Pump Station was originally constructed in the 1970s and directly pumped raw sewage into the Pacific Ocean. In 2018, the pump station was upgraded to improve its environmental impact. The expanded pump station pumps wastewater to the McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant for tertiary treatment and provides bypass pumping to the existing outfall during storm events.

The upgraded pump station was comprised of 42” schedule 10 stainless steel pipe. The interior piping system connects to the HDPE main piping system that runs to the wastewater treatment plant. The pump station is located directly along the Pacific Ocean in one of the most active seismic locations in North America.

Victaulic provided the Capital Regional District with a solution to connect the stainless steel and HDPE pipe that was environmentally friendly, reliable, and accommodated for movement. Style W257 Dynamic Movement Joint was utilized to connect to piping systems, accommodate for the movement, and prevent the pipes from shearing as they entered the pump house.

The Dynamic Movement Joints were coated in Modified Polyamine Ceramic Epoxy, which is an abrasion-resistant linking specifically designed for wastewater immersion, fume environments, and exposure to corrosive soils. The coating on the W257 eliminated the potential for corrosion between the stainless steel and the HDPE piping systems.

Additionally, Style W77 AGS Flexible Couplings were utilized within the pump station to make connections at various points. The Style W77s minimalized the installation time of the piping system and allows for easy access for future expansion and maintenance.

The expanded facility was constructed partially below ground with materials that will allow it to blend with the existing facility and surround the park area. With various public amenities, such as restrooms, walking paths, and bicycle facilities built on or around the pumping station ongoing reliable performance of this piping system was critical. The Victaulic solution instilled the Capital Regional District with confidence and trust.
